Tattoo Tipping Etiquette: How Much to Tip Your Artist in 2026
How much to tip a tattoo artist, when tipping is expected, how to tip on multi-session pieces and touch-ups, and what to do if you're not happy.
Tipping customs vary by country. In the US, tipping your tattoo artist is common; in the UK, Europe and Australia it's appreciated but less expected.
A common range
In the US, many clients tip somewhere around 15–25% of the session price, adjusting for the experience and the complexity of the work. Elsewhere, rounding up or a small cash gift is typical. Use our tip calculator to work out an amount.
When to tip
- At the end of each session — for multi-session pieces, tip per session rather than all at the end.
- On custom design work — some clients tip a little extra for heavy design time.
- Touch-ups — often free; a small tip is a kind gesture.
Do you tip the shop owner?
Many people do. Owners still put in the work, and tipping them is never wrong.
Cash or card?
Cash goes straight to the artist. If you tip on card, ask whether it reaches them in full.
If you're not happy
Talk to the artist first, calmly and specifically. Most will offer a touch-up. Tipping less is fine if the service, not just the result, fell short.
Other ways to say thanks
- A review on Google
- Tagging the artist when you post healed photos
