When to tip more than 20%

  • The artist drew custom work specifically for you.
  • They accommodated a reschedule or stayed past the booked time.
  • It's a long session (4+ hours) — their body is doing real work.
  • The piece is your first with this artist and you'd like to come back.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip my tattoo artist?
15–25% is the US standard. 20% is the default; tip toward 25% if the artist drew custom work, accommodated a reschedule, or stayed late. For multi-session pieces, tip after each session, not just the last one.
Should I tip in cash or on the card?
Cash is preferred — card processors take 2–4% off the top, and many studios pay the artist on a 60/40 or 70/30 split that the tip might pass through. Cash goes straight to the artist.
Do I tip on the deposit?
Tip on the total cost of the tattoo, not the post-deposit balance. Your deposit was already part of the price.
Should I tip an apprentice the same percentage?
Yes — same 15–25% range. Apprentices keep less of their hourly rate and tips are a meaningful part of their income.
