Can You Get a Tattoo While Sick, on Antibiotics, or Pregnant?
What studios commonly advise about getting tattooed when ill, taking medication, or pregnant — and why being honest on your consent form matters.
This is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition or take medication, talk to your doctor and tell your artist before booking.
Sick with a cold or flu
Most studios ask you to reschedule. Your body heals better when it isn't fighting an illness, sessions are harder to sit through, and you could pass it to your artist and other clients. Good studios will usually move the date if you tell them early.
On antibiotics
Antibiotics usually mean your body is dealing with an infection. Many artists prefer you finish the course and feel well before getting tattooed. Ask your doctor if you're unsure.
Blood thinners and other medication
Some medications can affect bleeding or healing. Mention everything on your consent form, and check with your doctor first.
Pregnant or breastfeeding
Most reputable studios won't tattoo during pregnancy, and many recommend waiting while breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor and your artist.
Skin conditions
Avoid tattooing over active rashes, sunburn, eczema flare-ups or broken skin.
Why the consent form asks
Health questions help your artist decide whether it's safe to go ahead today. Answer honestly — it protects you and them.
