Tipping norms vary a lot by country. In places where service tipping is standard — the US in particular — tattoo tipping is expected. Elsewhere it's appreciated but optional. Here's how to work out a fair amount without guessing at the counter.

Work out the base first

Calculate the tip from the total price of the tattoo, including any deposit you already paid. A $600 piece with a $100 deposit is still a $600 job — tipping on the remaining $500 quietly shortchanges the artist.

Typical ranges

In tipping cultures, most clients land between 15% and 25%, moving up for work that went beyond the brief.

Standard job, went as planned: around 15–20%
Complex custom work, cover-ups, or a long day: 20–25%
The artist stayed late, redrew, or squeezed you in: at the top of the range
Outside tipping cultures: nothing is expected, and anything is a bonus

Multi-session pieces

For sleeves and back pieces, tip at the end of each session. It spreads the cost for you and means the artist isn't waiting months. If you'd rather do one larger tip at the end, tell them so it doesn't read as no tip at all.

How to hand it over

Cash goes straight to the artist and avoids processing fees. Card tips are fine where the studio supports them — ask at the counter whether tips added to the card go to the artist directly. In booth-rent studios the artist usually keeps the whole tip; in commission studios, ask.

If you can't tip

Don't skip the tattoo over it. Book with a total you can afford including a tip, or tell the artist your budget up front so they can scale the piece. Leaving a detailed review, sending healed photos and referring friends all have real value to a working artist.
