Short showers are generally fine very soon after a tattoo; soaking is not. The distinction is between water running over the skin and the skin sitting submerged. Follow your artist's specific instructions first — the wrap they used changes the timing.

A short shower rinses the area and doesn't give bacteria a chance to sit in warm standing water. Baths, pools and hot tubs submerge healing skin for long periods and soften scabs — that's how ink drops out and how infection risk climbs.

How to shower with a new tattoo

Keep it short and gentle.

2Keep the tattoo out of the direct jet — let water run over it
3Wash gently with clean hands and fragrance-free soap if your artist advised it
4Rinse thoroughly so no soap residue is left
5Pat dry with a clean paper towel, never a shared bath towel

Adhesive healing film

If you were sent home in an adhesive healing film, you may be able to shower with it on and remove it later, at the time your artist specified. Removing it under warm running water is usually easier and less uncomfortable. Follow the studio's instructions on this — they vary by brand.

If something looks wrong

Water alone shouldn't cause problems. If the area becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen or starts producing pus, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than waiting to see.
