What to Do if a Tattoo Is Peeling
4 min read · Updated August 2026
Peeling is usually the healing working, not failing. The colour that comes away on the flakes is dead surface skin holding trapped ink, not your tattoo falling out. What matters is what you do while it happens.
Not medical advice. Always follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you — they know your skin, the ink and the wrap they used. If you have signs of infection or an unusual reaction (spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, fever, or a rash), contact a qualified healthcare professional promptly.
Why it peels
The tattoo needle damages the top layers of skin. As new skin forms underneath, the damaged surface dries and flakes away, taking some surface ink with it. That's why flakes look coloured — the ink that matters sits deeper.
What to do
Very little, deliberately.
- Keep the gentle wash routine going
- Moisturise in thin layers — dry skin itches more and flakes harder
- Let flakes fall off in their own time, usually in the shower
- Wear loose clothing so fabric isn't dragging pieces away
- Keep hands off it, especially at night
What not to do
Picking is the number one cause of patchy healed tattoos. Scratching, scrubbing, exfoliating, soaking to "speed it up" and peeling flakes off deliberately all risk pulling ink from areas that hadn't finished closing.
If it itches badly
Moisturise more often and gently pat rather than scratch. A light tap through clean clothing takes the edge off. If itching is severe, widespread or looks like a rash, speak to a qualified healthcare professional — it could be a reaction to a product or an ink.
Patchy areas after healing
Once fully healed, show your artist any spots that dropped out. Most studios expect the odd touch-up and will discuss it against their touch-up policy. Don't judge the result while the skin is still cloudy.

Frequently asked questions
- Is it normal for ink to come off when a tattoo peels?
- Coloured flakes are usually surface skin carrying trapped ink, which is a normal part of healing. The tattoo itself sits deeper in the skin.
- Should I moisturise a peeling tattoo?
- Yes, in thin layers and with whatever product your artist recommended. Dry skin flakes more aggressively and itches more.
- What if my tattoo isn't peeling at all?
- Some people barely peel, especially with certain wraps. That's not automatically a problem — mention it at your follow-up if you're unsure.
- When should I worry about peeling?
- Peeling plus spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, worsening pain or a fever isn't ordinary healing. Contact a qualified healthcare professional promptly.
