Most tattoos settle beautifully. Occasionally a small area drops out during healing, and that's what touch-up policies exist for. Policies are set per studio, so the only definitive answer is the one in your studio's terms — here's the shape of what's normal.

What a touch-up covers

Typically small areas where ink didn't hold: a patch of colour that healed light, a short section of line, or a soft spot in shading. It is not a redesign, an addition, or a fix for a piece you've changed your mind about.

What usually voids it

Studios draw a line where the healing problem came from the client's side.

Picking or scratching scabs
Sun exposure or sunbeds on healing skin
Swimming, soaking or hot tubs while healing
Not following the aftercare given
Waiting far beyond the studio's touch-up window

Placements that are often excluded

Hands, fingers, feet, elbows, knees and other high-friction or fast-regenerating areas are known to heal unpredictably. Many studios exclude them from free touch-ups or charge a reduced rate, and will say so before tattooing them.
