How to Sleep With a New Tattoo

4 min read · Updated August 2026

The first two or three nights are the awkward ones. A fresh tattoo can weep, stick to bedding and get squashed by however you normally sleep. A bit of preparation before bed makes the whole thing easier.

Not medical advice. Always follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you — they know your skin, the ink and the wrap they used. If you have signs of infection or an unusual reaction (spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, fever, or a rash), contact a qualified healthcare professional promptly.

Prepare the bed

Put on clean sheets you don't mind marking, and keep a dark towel to lie on over the tattooed area. Fresh tattoos weep a mix of plasma and ink for the first night or two — it stains, and it's not a sign anything is wrong.

Position by placement

Aim to keep pressure and friction off the piece.

  • Back or shoulder piece: sleep on your front or side
  • Chest or stomach: sleep on your back
  • Arm: keep it on top, propped on a pillow to reduce swelling
  • Leg: a pillow between the knees stops legs rubbing together

To re-wrap or not

Studios differ. Some send you home in adhesive healing film that stays on for days; others advise a light re-wrap for the first night only and nothing after that. Do what your artist told you rather than what a video said — over-wrapping traps moisture.

If it sticks to the sheets

Don't pull it free. Soak the area with lukewarm water until the fabric releases on its own, then wash the tattoo gently, pat dry and apply a thin layer of your product.

Sleep and healing

Rest genuinely helps healing. If pain is stopping you sleeping several days in, or the area is hot, swollen or producing pus, get advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sleep on a new tattoo?
Try not to. Pressure and friction against bedding all night can irritate the area and pull at healing skin. Position pillows to keep it clear where you can.
Should I wrap my tattoo overnight?
Only if your artist told you to, and only with what they recommended. Wrap type and duration vary by studio.
Why is my tattoo leaking on the sheets?
A mix of plasma, lymph and excess ink comes out in the first day or two. It's normal, it stains, and it's why you should use old bedding.
