Before your tattoo
What to Eat Before Getting a Tattoo
5 min read · Updated August 2026
The most common reason a session gets cut short is not pain — it's low blood sugar. Getting tattooed on an empty stomach is how people end up lightheaded, clammy and lying on the studio floor. Eating well beforehand is the easiest thing you can control.
Timing matters more than the menu
Aim to finish a proper meal one to two hours before you sit down. Too close and you'll feel uncomfortable lying on your stomach; too far and your blood sugar drops right when the adrenaline does.
What works well
Combine protein, complex carbohydrates and some fat so energy releases slowly across the session.
- Eggs on wholegrain toast, or oats with nuts and fruit
- Chicken or beans with rice or pasta
- A substantial sandwich rather than a light salad
- Water throughout the morning — hydrated skin takes ink better
What to avoid
Alcohol thins the blood and is the one hard no. Beyond that, avoid anything that spikes and crashes.
- Alcohol in the 24 hours before
- A sugar-only breakfast, which crashes an hour in
- Heavy greasy meals immediately beforehand if you'll be face-down
- Excess caffeine if it makes you shaky
Snacks for long sittings
For a half or full day, plan to eat again during breaks. Cereal bars, fruit, nuts, a sandwich and a sugary drink for a quick lift all work. Tell your artist as soon as you feel off — a five-minute break with a snack fixes most wobbles.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you get a tattoo on an empty stomach?
- You can, but you shouldn't. Low blood sugar is the main cause of dizziness and fainting during sessions, and many artists will send you to get food before they start.
- Should I eat sugar before a tattoo?
- A balanced meal is better. Keep something sugary in your bag for a mid-session lift rather than relying on it as your only fuel.
- Can I drink coffee before a tattoo?
- If it's part of your normal routine, fine. Extra caffeine on top of nerves can make you jittery and harder to keep still.
