Start from the style

Fine line, traditional, Japanese, blackwork, realism and script are genuinely different crafts. Decide roughly what you want, then look for artists whose portfolios are full of that — not artists who've done one example of it.

How to read a portfolio

Look past the flashy hero shots.

Are lines consistent and confident across many pieces, not just one?
Is shading smooth, or patchy where it should blend?
Are there healed photos, and do they still look sharp?
Do they show work on skin tones similar to yours?
Is there variety of placement, or only flat forearms?

Good signs

Professional practice shows up before the needle does: a clear booking process, a written deposit and reschedule policy, a proper consultation, questions about your health and prior work, and a licensed, visibly clean studio.
